Fiber Splicing Technician

Position Summary

The Fiber Optic Splicing Technician’s main duties include supporting fiber optic cable termination and testing in both outdoor and indoor settings, keeping an eye on outside plant (OSP) activities near the designated work site(s), reading and comprehending network splicing plans, and taking and maintaining accurate field notes.

Job Duties:

Perform cable splicing and termination in accordance with industry standards. Read and adhere to the design engineers’ instructions and guidelines, keep the project’s scope of work consistent, and adhere to safety procedures.

2. Follow PM, Lead Tech and/or Supervisors instructions, maintain the scope of work on the project and adhere to safety procedures

3. Prepare engineering field notes. Interpret, splice diagrams, buried underground, and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field and make recommendations for changes in fiber assignments

4. Understand and adhere to customer timelines

5. Serve as a corporate liaison to champion cultural change by encouraging critical corporate initiatives, a positive work environment, the enhancement of organizational morale all with the goal to drive operational efficiency

6. Team player that coordinates and communicates fiber activities with other employees, departments, and management

Experience and Education:

1.Education Level: High School/GED

2. Experience: 2-4 years of relevant job experience. Relevant job experience is described as job experience in similar industry or job experience with similar essential duties

3. A valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets company requirements will be an advantage.

Competencies/ Skills:

1. Knowledge of fiber optic cable splicing techniques including but not limited to single-fusion, mass-fusion and mechanical method

2. Knowledge of fiber optic testing including but not limited to power meter, ORL, OTDR, CD and PMD

3. Knowledge of fiber optic cable types, make-up of fiber optic cables, and manufacturer specifications to prevent damage of cables

4. Expertise in OSP and ISP splice enclosures and termination panels from different manufacturers

5. Knowledge of fundamental telecom outside plant construction methods and fiber network design

6. Understanding of fundamental safety procedures for inside plants and public rights of way

Strong computer skills with Microsoft applications; knowledge of data center security procedures; and adherence to the security measures implemented

8. The capacity for careful attention to detail and sound judgment
